Painting From Reference - A Chirstmas Carol Study

Learn how to study from movie stills or photography effectively rather than just blindly and mindlessly copying.

Many teachers tell you to study, sometimes from life, sometimes from photos but often we end up not knowing exactly why we're doing it and what we're supposed to be aiming for.

Our goal in this tutorial is to create a loose, painterly image in an almost traditional style to help develop our painting skills and using reference correctly to guide us through the process.

What you'll get:

  • 3 videos: a 45 real-time intro discussing the techniques used in the timelapse videos as well as two main videos (one painting split into two) showing the entire process of this Victorian Christmas painting.

  • Brushes: not too many brushes, but I supply the main ones used in the creation of this painting. It's good to keep brushes to a minimum.

  • WIP images: It's useful to be able to see the stages of the painting without having to scrub through hours of video.

  • A 2k final image so you can look more closely at the brush work.

  • A little bonus video just showing how the brush settings should be used.
